Hyundai Motor Group has signed an agreement to partner with Michelin for the development of tires for electric vehicles over the next three years, a news release said.

“This partnership with Michelin will result in real innovations in tire technology, solidifying Hyundai Motor Group’s position as a leader in the smart mobility industry,” Bong-soo Kim, Hyundai vice president and head of Chassis Development Center, said in a statement. “By fully leveraging our mobility technology and Michelin’s tire expertise, we are confident in our ability to achieve groundbreaking innovations in tire performance enhancement and create synergies in this organic collaboration.”

Kim and Georges Levy, executive vice president of Automotive Original Equipment at Michelin, signed the memorandum of understanding June 17 in Seoul at Hyundai Motor Group's Namyang Research Center, according to the news release.

The newest commitment to a partnership between the companies is a follow-up to the five-year agreement previously signed in 2017 to develop an exclusive tire for the IONIQ 5, in which experiments and analysis methods related to the tires and technologies were shared.

Under the new partnership, both companies will focus on the development of eco-friendly tires that are made up of approximately 50% sustainable materials, the news release said. They will also conduct research into accommodating increased vehicle weight by securing tire performance. Other collaborations between the companies include developing a real-time tire monitoring system for autonomous driving technology and securing premium tire technology to provide future mobility solutions.
