Ford is teaming up with ADT -- a company that provides home and business security and alarm monitoring systems -- to create an aftermarket car security system.

The joint venture, which is called Canopy, will provide home and business security and alarm monitoring systems.

“Thieves have been even more active during the pandemic and (they) know business owners store valuable equipment in vehicles,” Franck Louis-Victor, vice president of Ford New Business Platform, told NWI.com. “Canopy is here for those who’ve had enough of thefts that threaten their livelihoods. Key to Ford’s software-led transformation are new ideas such as Canopy and collaborating with other innovators such as ADT, which brings to vehicle security their leadership protecting families, homes and businesses.”

Canopy will be an aftermarket vehicle security system that aims to prevent theft using acoustic sensors, onboard cameras, radar and GPS, according to Car and Driver.

Car owners will be able to view a livestream of their vehicle from their smartphone on the Canopy app, complete with a two-way audio system that would allow the vehicle owner to let the thief know they are under video surveillance.

Canopy will leverage ADT’s professional security monitoring and Ford’s AI-driven video camera technology. Ford and ADT have invested $105 million in the joint venture, TechCrunch reported.
