Electric (EV) and hybrid vehicle sales saw a significant jump in 2021, according to MotorTrend.

These vehicles accounted for 1,236,429 more units on the road in 2021.

“That said, manufacturers with strong hybrid lineups did well this year with those vehicles,” MotorTrend stated. “It sure seems like there's momentum in the electrified space beyond a mere expansion of offerings.”

Hybrids made up 801,550 of the year's sales, a 76% jump over 2020, and EVs made up the remaining 434,879, an 83% jump in sales over 2020, according to MotorTrend.

However, of the total number of cars sold in 2021, only 5% were hybrids and 3% were EVs.

Toyota recorded a 73% sales growth with 583,697 units of hybrids, plug-ins and fuel cells sold. Honda Motor Company also boosted hybrid sales by 67% with 107,060 units sold in 2021. General Motors still posted a 20% sales growth on its Chevrolet Bolt, despite its battery fire risk issues, which sparked a recall.
