The Ford Mustang Mach-E is a hot car, but the cost of replacing the batteries could put a chill on the thrill.

The extended-range batteries alone could cost up to $23,648, more than the new Ford Maverick truck, which starts at $19,995 for the XL Hybrid, according to CarBuzz. That doesn't include a $5,000 "core" charge.

With a list price of $43,895 for the Mach-E Select, the battery accounts for nearly half the price. However, prices vary by dealer.

A Reddit user was quoted $42,624 for a Ford Mustang Mach-E battery.

However, first owners of the car might not ever need to pay for replacing the batteries, which are covered by an eight-year, 100,000-mile warranty. But CarBuzz called the replacement cost "scary" for a single piece of the car.

AutoEvolution reported that the current battery costs could be inflated because of the strong demand for the Mach-E, which has strained production. Ford is devoting entire production facilities to the Mach-E and still can't produce enough to meet demand. As a result, the company has delayed development of the Explorer EV and the Lincoln Aviator EV, AutoEvolution reported.

The price of batteries could change dramatically once the company catches up on production.
