Some recent models of Ford Broncos and Escapes will be recalled for possible faulty brake systems.

Ford is recalling almost 115,000 vehicles, mostly Bronco and Escape models, which share a brake system.

“These vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 135, Light Vehicle Brake Systems," the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said in a letter to Ford. "During certain situations, the driver may have to apply more brake pedal force, and the distance required to stop the vehicle may be extended, increasing the risk of a crash."

The 2021 and 2022 recalled models have rear brakes that don’t stop within the government-mandated distance, according to Autoblog. NHTSA says, “The rear brake linings may have been manufactured incorrectly, which can affect braking performance.”

Bronco Sport and Escape SUVs that are equipped with an electronic brake booster "are not affected by this issue because they have higher system pressures if the booster malfunctions," NHTSA said, according to Car and Driver.

Ford says it is not aware of any accidents or injuries directly caused by the braking issue. The recall will begin on Jan. 10, 2022.
