The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a recall for 2018 and 2019 Toyota Camry models due to a defect affecting power-braking assistance.

The car manufacturer is issuing a recall that affects more than 227,000 Camrys in the U.S.

“The involved vehicles have a system that provides power brake assist when the driver depresses the brake pedal,” Toyota said in a press release. “Specific components in a part of this system can prematurely wear and could lead to a sudden loss of power-braking assist.”

Toyota clarified that “non-power-assisted braking will remain functional, but a sudden loss of power-braking assist while driving could increase the risk of a crash.”

However, the Japanese multinational automotive manufacturer says it does not affect the Camry hybrid because it does not have a vacuum pump.

Car and Driver reports that the recall includes Camry models produced between Jan. 16, 2017, and Sept. 13, 2018. Toyota dealers will inspect the vacuum pump of all involved vehicles and repair or replace it for free. Owners will be notified of the recall by mid-January 2022.

According to Fox Business, "You can find out whether your vehicle is one of those being recalled by visiting Toyota.com/recall and entering your car's Vehicle Identification Number or its license plate  number."
