The prospect of a Kia pickup truck entering the automotive market looks slim.

There have been rumors about the release of a Kia pickup truck for years. But current news indicates the probability of that happening isn’t very good.

"I think it's probably a long shot," Kia Australia's COO Damien Meredith said, according to CarBuzz. "We haven't had any definitive answer from Kia headquarters."

Kia kept hinting at the prospect of a dual cab “ute” for the Australian market, to take on the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux pickup trucks.

CarBuzz also reported that the development of a Kia pickup seemed to have been given the green light a year ago, and some were hoping for a launch in 2022.

However, the pickup truck industry does not seem to be the focus for Kia as they work on their electric vehicle lineup.

"I think if they had have done it and planned it, then it would have been here by now," Meredith told CarBuzz. "Don't get  depressed by that. We've got a lot of good stuff coming in regards to alternate fuels, and we're really excited about what the future holds for the brand."
