Even after the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear appeals by Volkswagen and German auto supplier Robert Bosch, LLC, a spokesperson from their team stated that the court's decision does not play a role in the "determination of the merits" of their legal arguments, according to Reuters.

"We are confident in the strength of our factual and legal defenses, including that the software updates reduced emissions, and will contest these claims vigorously as these cases proceed," the spokesperson told CarBuzz.

Volkswagen is one step closer to having to pay up for potential emissions cheating in Florida, Utah and Ohio.

The German motor vehicle manufacturer has already paid $20 billion to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and claims the Clean Air Act states that only the federal government can pursue those in violation.

The lawsuits accused Volkswagen of duping the EPA and thereby also violating the local laws.

"We're pleased the Supreme Court recognized that federal environmental law does not give car manufacturers the right to defraud Ohioans," a spokesperson for Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost told CarBuzz.
