Plymouth, Michigan-based electric automaker, Rivian, is eyeing a global footprint and intends to produce right-hand-drive vehicles in the future.

While the company plans to operate worldwide, Rivian founder and CEO R.J. Scaringe acknowledges they still have to work on meeting production demands in the U.S.

"You wouldn't start a car company with the idea of only doing one car," Scaringe told MotorTrend. "We have to develop a portfolio of programs and platforms."

Rivian is a young electric car company that has begun production of its first model, 2022 Rivian r1t, which is an electric pickup truck that can drive 314 miles on a single charge, with more models to follow and a second R2 family of vehicles to come.

The electric vehicle automaker eventually seeks to manufacture right-hand-drive versions of Rivian models to be sold outside of the U.S. However, production demands must be met inside the country first, which already has a preexisting waiting list. Scaringe added that Rivian’s technologies, architectures and platforms are designed to support their global aspirations.

Rivian also has a contract to build 10,000 electric delivery vans for Amazon Prime. It is set to implement its full-scale delivery of Amazon Prime electric vans later this year, according to MotorTrend.
