General Motors has required its salaried U.S. employees to report their COVID-19 vaccination status in order to help the company guide its safety procedures.

Employees were assured that their information will be confidential, submitted through an online system, and will be in compliance with the company’s privacy and security policies.

“The reporting of our employees' vaccination status is helping GM Medical assess the overall immunity of our employee population and determine when GM should relax or strengthen certain COVID-19 safety protocols, as recommended by the CDC and OSHA, such as mask wearing, physical distancing and facility occupancy rates," GM Spokesperson Maria Raynal told Automotive News.

The vaccination rates among the 42,000 salaried employees will help GM to evaluate its team’s level of immunity and aid them to determine if there’s a need to bolster safety procedures or rescind any. Salaried employees who claimed they have been vaccinated were asked to submit proof of vaccination status through the online system before Aug. 23.

The system that the employees used to disclose their vaccination status was only accessible while on the GM network, as an added data protection for the information submitted.

Vaccination status reporting from the company’s 46,000 hourly workers have not yet been made compulsory, but workers can voluntarily submit their data, Automotive News reported.
