A bill that would allow Michigan car owners to process vehicle titles and registrations at any dealership has recently been filed in the Michigan Senate.

Senate Bill 585, filed by Sen. Roger Victory (R-Hudsonville), would permit dealerships to provide these services even to customers who did not purchase their vehicles from their site.

“This is about creating more options for hardworking folks to access in-person services when they buy or sell a car or need to register their truck,” Victory said, according to the Holland Sentinel. “My bill would allow them to expand these necessary services for vehicle purchases that happen outside of their dealership, like a direct seller-to-buyer transaction.

With SB 585, dealerships can charge a fee for title and registration services.

SB 585, otherwise known as the "Michigan vehicle code," would also help in minimizing the "backlog of people trying to get appointments at local Secretary of State offices," Victory told the Holland Sentinel. However, branch offices are still offering these transactions.

The bipartisan measure has now been referred to the Committee on Regulatory Reform for a hearing. Victory’s Republican colleagues -- Sens. Kimberly LaSata, Kenneth Horn, Kevin Daley, John Bizon, Jon Bumstead, Dale Zorn, Ricky Outman, Michael MacDonald, Lana Theis, Dan Lauwers, Jim Stamas, Curtis VanderWall, James Runestad, Ruth Johnson and Wayne Schmidt -- were also sponsors of the bill. It was supported by Democratic Sens. Paul Wojno and Stephanie Chang.
