Presenting an enhanced customer experience, Volkswagen unleashed its airport-style check-in kiosks at dealerships throughout the U.K.

The contactless new system is currently operated by 12 retailers, and 50 sites are projected to use the check-in desks before 2021 ends.

"The system also allows quick drop-offs -- for example if someone needed to drop their keys off at the retailer on their way to work," Andrew Savvas, director at Volkswagen UK, told CarDealer Magazine. "Add to this the elements of Covid safety and security, and you’ve got a surprisingly simple yet compelling addition to the traditional car retailer that benefits both the customer and the staff immensely, and fits with the brand’s digital connectivity ethos wholeheartedly."

A significant number of customers are using the service when it's available, Volkswagen found, according to CarDealer Magazine. Eight British Volkswagen retailers were found to have used the system across a 16-week period during the system’s pilot operation last year.

One-third of customers check in from home through text message, and 47% check in using the check-in desk itself, CarDealer Magazine reported. Additionally, customers can also pay for services via SMS links sent directly to their smartphones. The contactless use of the system is also a safety measure as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.

The check-in desks remind customers of routine maintenance needed for their vehicles.
