Consumers go the extra mile to find the cars they want, literally, according to the latest study from Cars.com.

Due to vehicle inventory shortages, the research revealed that recently nearly 10% of car shoppers drove out of state to buy the vehicle they wanted, with 52% of those traveling 25 miles. Nearly 20% travel 50 miles and 13% of car buyers travel beyond 250 miles to a dealership.

“With the current auto inventory challenges, recent car buyers are going to great lengths to find the car they want,” Kelsey Mays, Cars.com assistant managing editor, news, said. “I don’t anticipate this trend slowing down, either. Of consumers currently in the market and shopping for a car, 65% said they would consider purchasing in another state.”

Over half of car shoppers are looking to trade their vehicle into local dealerships, Cars.com reported.

Fifty-seven percent of shoppers bought a new car out of state, Cars.com reported. And 43% of shoppers bought a used car out of state.

Cars.com has nearly two million vehicles available for home delivery, the website stated. Mays also recommended that when using Cars.com, car shoppers can expand their search radius to include larger and more urban markets and “look for the Delivered to You tags next to vehicle listings on our site to find dealers who will, for a fee, ship a car right to your door.”
