Jeep, Murray flip script in 'Groundhog Day' Super Bowl spot

Jeep brand launched its 60-second "Groundhog Day" television commercial during last week's Super Bowl LIV, featuring Bill Murray reprising his role as Phil Connors from the 1993 hit film.

Unlike in the original movie, Phil starts to like his “every day is Groundhog Day” after seeing the 2020 Jeep Gladiator. With the open-air 4 x 4 pickup truck, Phil never felt that he was stuck in the same day every day – delivering the spot’s message that “No day is the same in a Jeep Gladiator.”

The big game and Groundhog Day fell on the same day for only the second time in history.

"When we learned that Groundhog Day fell on Super Bowl Sunday for the second time in 54 years, we couldn't help but take that chance," FCA Chief Marketing Officer Olivier Francois said in a press release. "The stars magically aligned. Bill agreed to do the first national broadcast commercial in which he's ever appeared, and not only that, relive his role as Phil Connors for our Jeep Gladiator. But this time, in our spot, the hero makes a different choice by choosing a different pick-up truck – the Jeep Gladiator – and it changes everything for him."
