Prevent holiday vehicle theft with tips from GEICO

With the holidays in full swing and the recent release of the 2018 National Crime Information Center Holiday Vehicle Theft Report, GEICO has shared some advice on how to prevent vehicle theft during the holiday season.

According to the insurance giant, theft can be prevented if vehicles are locked at all times, even while driving; windows and sunroof are kept closed; drivers make sure they bring their keys and valuables when leaving their vehicles, or cover the belongings that are left behind; drivers park in well-lit areas whenever possible; they never leave an unattended  vehicle running, and drivers always remain aware of their surroundings.

GEICO Director of Special Investigations Unit Douglas Shiring reminds vehicle owners that modern-day thieves are aided by technology just as today's consumers are.

“Thefts of those early vehicles were mostly owner error,” Shiring said. “People just left their key in or near the vehicle at the time of the theft. Today, the bad guys have a new item in their tool bag, which is eliminating the need for a key altogether.”
