To open this year's Chicago Auto Show, the Midwest Automotive Media Association (MAMA) named the winners of Family Vehicle of the Year.

The 2019 Subaru Ascent grabbed the ninth Family Vehicle of the Year Award, while the 2019 Volvo XC40 became the first Luxury Family Vehicle of the Year Award.

"MAMA members pooled their expertise and experience to select the best family vehicles from an outstanding group of new and significantly refreshed models, and the Subaru Ascent and Volvo XC40 came out on top,” MAMA award coordinator Tim Healey said.

Approximately 100 manufacturers contended for this title. To be eligible, vehicles must be four-door and updated for the annual MAMA Spring Rally and Fall Rally. Family vehicles must be versatile, reliable, efficient and reasonably priced.

“As the consumer auto show, the Chicago Auto Show serves as the perfect venue to make the MAMA Family Vehicle and Luxury Family of the Year Award announcement,” Chicago Auto Show Chairman Ray Scarpelli said. “The MAMA breakfast and award announcement was a great kickoff to the 2019 Chicago Auto Show.”

MAMA started in 1991 providing car reviews for consumers. Now in its 28th year, this nonprofit group of automotive experts has grown to a 261-member team of journalists.
