Mitsubishi may have discontinued the classic Lancer, but it will definitely get some major re-hauling as with the case of the Eclipse.
As for the Lancer, Mitsubishi will turn it into a high-riding crossover.
According to Mitsubishi’s chief operating officer and chief designer, the new and improved version of the Lancer may be inspired from its e-Evolution concept. Last year, the Japanese car brand already showed a prototype teaser, which showed a futuristic shape and a coupe design.
“The segment’s] numbers are still expanding in China, so there’s appeal. And I think because the segment is so large globally, we’ve got to take a look at it,” COO Trevor Mann said.
The brand also expects future demands for the hatchback and crossover SUV segments.
“Just because it’s C-segment, it doesn’t mean it has to be a very conventional hatchback," Chief Designer Tsunehiro Kunimoto said. "Maybe we can create a new type of hatchback vehicle. We’re thinking quite radically.”
Lancer’s overhaul could be complete within a few years.
