West Herr Auto Group has issued a guide to prepare cars for extreme conditions during winter months in Western New York.

Cars should be equipped with snow tires that are specially designed to run on snowy roads and prevent sliding when the driver brakes.

Car owners should also have their batteries professionally checked and wash their vehicles regularly to prevent rust resulting from road salt, snow and moisture.

Drivers must always carry an emergency kit that includes a shovel, sand or cat litter for traction, flashlight, food and water, extra outerwear, first aid kit, blanket or sleeping bag, road flares and a cell phone adapter.

West Herr also suggests regular checks of oil, windshield wiper fluid levels, coolant and brake and transmission fluid as well as the use of winter wiper blades to keep the windshield clear.

Other tips from West Herr Auto Group include:

  • The simultaneous use of air conditioning with the heater and defroster to prevent fogging.
  • Putting socks on windshield wipers to keep them from freezing overnight.
  • Placing a sock filled with clean cat litter in the car to absorb moisture and prevent fog.
  • Mixing one-third of water and with two-thirds of rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle to create an instant windshield ice remover.
