Ancira Kia offers tips for traveling with pets

As the summer driving season approaches, Ancira Kia is offering tips on its website to ensure traveling with pets is as safe, simple and enjoyable as possible.

If your pet hasn't traveled by car much, familiarize them with the vehicle before the trip. Allow them to spend a little time in and around the car while the engine is off. Take the pet on brief trips before venturing out for a long journey so they become familiar with car travel, the posting said.

Make your pet as comfortable as possible by bringing along his favorite blanket or toy. Use a special pet leash or car crate to ensure your pet can be safely secured in the back seat area. Any harness or carrier should allow ample room to keep the pet safely enclosed while also offering plenty of room to sit, stand and lie down.

Schedule rest stops every two hours or so ensure you and your pet can get out and stretch. Offer ample water and bathroom breaks to help prevent accidents. Take the dog for a walk while on a driving break to allow your pet to exercise and work off excess energy.

Small treats are OK, but avoid overfeeding your pet to prevent carsickness. It's best to feed your pet several hours before a trip for the same reason.

Bring an extra leash, food, water and any special items your pet may need on the trip. Keep his health records on hand as well, in case you need to make an unexpected visit to a veterinarian.
